Dr. Rob Bell
[00:00:00] Welcome to Mental Toughness with Dr. Rob Bell.
[00:00:13] Each week, Dr. Rob sits down with athletes, executives, and expert coaches to talk about
[00:00:18] mental toughness and their hinge moment.
[00:00:21] Here's your host, Dr. Rob. Folks, when I finished my 100 miler, I was happy to be done, but I wasn't finished. The reason why my legs weren't completely bonked from running was that I used PR lotion by Momentus. It simply eliminated any lactic acid build up in my legs and it's the best product I've
[00:01:45] ever used. LiveMomentus.com. So our guest today on the Mental Toughness podcast, chief operating officer of Luminous, which is the parent company and I've done a little bit of exploring. And I think my favorite place to go that I've ever been is Zion National Park. So I'm actually just scheduled a trip recently where I'm going to hit Zion.
[00:04:21] I'm going to drive to Zion, go from Zion lot of different things about it and different places to check out. So I need to do a little bit more research before I go and make sure I see the good spots, but it'll be fun. Love it, man. When we were out there before, I remember it was just like, it was getting near dinner time. We had a full day golf hiking already, you know,
[00:05:40] and I remember then my niece was out there. She's like,
[00:05:42] do you want to go like check out the sunset, you know, like up top bell rock?
[00:06:41] That's how you go. It's, it is, it's inspiring.
[00:06:43] I love it, man.
[00:06:45] So, stamina pro, like I've used stamina pro patches.
[00:06:50] It was introduced to me by a client.
[00:06:53] I mean, I love them, right?
[00:06:55] I mean, I'm kind of astounded really by, you know,
[00:06:58] the impact that it has on inflammation.
[00:07:01] I mean, without getting too techie though, but I mean,
[00:07:04] share with us because I am always skeptical,
[00:07:07] but then when I started using the patches, when you connect your bare feet to the ground or any part of your body directly to the earth or to nature, there is an exchange that occurs of electrons. So, you know, the surface of the earth is teeming with electrons and it has a slightly negative charge and your body is radiating
[00:09:40] at, you know, between 100 and 400 micro on new information, new discoveries, new devices to be able to study some of this stuff or new methodologies to study some of these anomalies that we information in there. And when we apply that patch to our skin, and as long as you have enough charge, it can induce that flow of electrons from the patch into the body and then have an effect. So there is a legitimate biological effect that occurs. We've studied this in a clinical study a few years ago,
[00:11:02] and that was the result.
[00:11:03] The result was reduced inflammation
[00:11:06] and reduced pain is what we saw. But it has real biological effects, and this is stuff that, you know, we're just on the forefront of understanding." Hey, good-looking! If you like this podcast and are already a badass, but it's all way too complicated, then visit our website, drrobbbell.com, and schedule a call with us to help capture your
[00:12:23] very own Hinge Moment. chemical is just like a package. It's just holding information in a very specific way. And so within that chemical, there are electrons and they're just electrical impulses. So when you digest a chemical, if you're taking it orally, right, and you digest it, it goes to your stomach, it breaks down, it may have other chemical reactions that occur, and eventually that goes
[00:13:41] into your bloodstream and then it binds to a receptor and then the receptor sends a signal.
[00:13:44] So we're just a makeup of all famous examples on the golf tour. Don't give me away yet, man. Yeah. Yeah. But we've had some interesting experiences for sure, or some more public than others. And then- I mean, let's share with that. I mean, we're always in these tinge moments that happen. I mean, let's talk about that one for golfers. I mean, 2018 at the us, our CEO, Matt Case, which coincidentally it was his birthday weekend, while he was there at the Masters. We have a lot of partners and friends on the golf tour. And so we had a presence there. We have Dr. Davies and Dr. Love, who are treating a lot of guys on tour with us as well,
[00:16:21] that we're affiliated with.
[00:16:25] In that circumstance, when Matt there, our CEO, to explain exactly what was going on, the effect that was occurring, and having the support of some of the other trainers there on tour and doctors on tour, again, it created this perfect moment to introduce the product, one that's unique, but that effective, what is the mental game in your perspective about taking that to product and company to market and being successful? I think the mental toughness comes from a place of being real with yourself.
[00:19:01] So look, there's, and you know this as well, there's a lot of snake oil out there, And Luminos was beginning to develop a product and we were testing different prototypes on people to see, again, to try to get to a place where we could see consistent effects, consistent byproduct of wearing the patches, reduction in inflammation before we even got to the
[00:20:21] clinical stage where we did our first clinical study. you'll need to make these so that I can wear it while I play and it's going to stay on. That was the birth. That was the literal birth. Something like stamina pro. We realized that was a totally different addressable market with totally different branding. We have to educate people differently. The use case is different. The product itself and like the, the adhesive we use and the fabric we use is different.
[00:21:42] And we realized that that was a big enough opportunity to actually address it.
[00:22:44] general market, the people that are using Tylenol on the shelf kind of a thing.
[00:22:45] Right.
[00:22:48] And that's kind of the general market that's experiencing pain and inflammation. And then we have the market, which is much more of an active market.
[00:22:52] It's much more for performance related.
[00:22:54] And again, much more sports oriented.
[00:22:56] So we saw those twos as viable commercial
[00:23:00] opportunities for the business.
[00:23:01] We developed a second brand after Luminos
[00:23:03] as stamina pro, like you've mentioned, more financially sustainable initiatives, and then also refocus our company on research, which is really where we're focused today.
[00:24:21] Yeah. So the longterm vision, where do you, where do you see it going, Tyler?
[00:25:25] that way. And so we don't see ourselves necessarily as the ones that are going to do all the commercial branding and marketing and go to market strategy on that stuff. The potential is there to partner
[00:25:31] with someone that is strategic in the space that has a legacy and has reached to a lot of consumers
[00:25:38] or a lot of people in pain. I think that's the most easy vertical for us to tap into and have
[00:25:44] a big impact on the world in a really positive we look for immediate results. And so it's very easy for us to take a pill off the shelf and have temporary relief. And a lot of times that's just numbing the issue rather than addressing the source of the problem. And so pain, again, of that pain. But look, recovery is the key. You know, you gotta get your body in balance. Your body is constantly fighting for a state of homeostasis, which is essentially another word for efficiency. Your body is trying to be as efficient as possible. And so if you have things like inflammation
[00:28:21] that's lingering in your body,
[00:28:24] that by definition makes you more inefficient.
[00:28:27] And inefficiencies patience means to be present in the moment. So the more present and in the moment you can be, the more focus you're going to be.
[00:29:40] You can find those states of happiness, you can find those states of efficiency like we
[00:29:45] just talked about in getting things done in the right manner. citizen over here that, you know, but I definitely work on it. You know, our whole team really tries to work on this exact topic. You know, our company, we start three days a week. We start with a stand up every single morning. And I know everybody's got a thousand things on their plate. But we start with a grateful exercise.
[00:31:00] So we, everybody around the room, and there's probably 10 of us, we go through and we say,
[00:31:05] what's one thing you're thankful for?
[00:31:07] And it could be something that's related to the business. But that's how we start every single meeting. Right? And then you'll appreciate this. You work with a lot of guys and athletics, obviously, but we break every single meeting down as well with one more, we have different people do it each day, but typically it's a couple of the same people
[00:32:21] and we'll have some wise words,
[00:32:22] some more like philosophical words of,
[00:32:26] let's have a great team, so their contributions have a massive impact. We reiterate all the time that impact that we're having, like knowing why you do what you do is critical for each person on our team. We went through an exercise a couple of weeks back where
[00:34:43] and when you hear the words from other people,
[00:34:48] again, that's what drives culture, is understanding your purpose and the impact you're having
[00:34:52] on the people within our four walls in our business,
[00:34:56] and then on the people outside
[00:34:57] that these patches are getting in the hands of,
[00:35:00] and what kind of impact we can have on the world.
[00:35:02] I think that's so important, especially in today's age.
[00:35:06] We have a lot of, we have to be a little bit more present, make decisions today that maybe we don't want to have to make, but we need to in order to get to where we want to be in three years, five years, 10 years. Well said, man. Well said. Mic drop moment again, man. Taylor, what question should I be asking that I haven't asked?
[00:37:23] of an equation of success. And if the equation of success has different variables
[00:37:28] like effort, and it could have a bunch
[00:37:32] of different variables and each business
[00:37:34] is gonna have different variables,
[00:37:35] but effort is one of them, time is always one of them.
[00:37:38] And you know this, how much time and effort
[00:37:42] did you have to put into that book?
[00:37:43] How much time and effort did you have to put
[00:37:45] into other people and clients that you want, but putting in the work day in and day out, right, and staying with it, sticking with it, and letting the time variable just accumulate. It compounds the effect of your potential success. And then things happen. I don't know if you've ever seen it, like, you know, humans have a really tough time with compounding. They really, every business is different and it's all different, but you just can't manipulate the minutes, the hours, the days that you're contributing or you're allowing for something to kind of manifest. Yeah. Man, we've had like three mic drop moments, man. Well, I mean,
[00:40:21] the compounding in action, I mean, that's why Warren Buffett is so wealthy is from compounding.
[00:41:25] it's definitely the case you're spot on. And I think getting into that mindset that you were just talking about is kind of that flow. And the more you get into that, I think it's all about
[00:41:33] understanding yourself. Because when you get to that vibrational state of mind or being,
[00:41:44] you see it in sports a lot. Sports is just take some time. In the real world where we don't have immediate feedback from a ball going through a hoop, or Tony Feeney now hitting an ace on a par three, that's the immediate feedback loops. And so it's a little bit more difficult. You gotta pay attention to see how things are playing out in the real world for you if you're in that flow.
[00:43:03] Want to listen to your favorite music,
[00:43:04] but you're sick of all the commercial interruptions
[00:43:07] and negative news today?
